  • Two Kenyan brothers have been given long prison sentences in the US for drug trafficking and other crimes. Baktash Akasha was sentenced to 25 years in prison in August 2019. In January 2020 his younger brother Ibrahim Akasha was sent away for 23 years. On 13 January 2020 a user posted an official-looking letter that seems to be from Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization , on Facebook. In the letter , Interpol appears to thank Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for its role in the successful arrest, extradition and trial of the Akasha brothers. It then asks for the DCI’s help extraditing four Kenyan judges and a lawyer over their links to drug trafficking and bribes to act in favour of the Akashas. ‘Disregard this letter’ The DCI falls under the national police service , which is part of the ministry of interior . The ministry responded quickly to the letter, posting it on its official Twitter and Facebook accounts with FAKE stamped on it in red. Kindly disregard this letter circulating on social media purporting to be from Interpol headquarters, the ministry said in both posts . – Dancan Bwire (en)
