  • Flamingo egg yolks are pink. Like chicken eggs, flamingo eggs have yellow to red egg yolks. A photo of an egg with a pink yolk that the caption incorrectly claims is a flamingo egg has been shared several times on Facebook, and the claim has appeared across the internet. The claim is not true. The yolk of flamingo eggs is a similar colour to that of chickens - yellow to reddish. It can sometimes have a slight pink hue from the bird’s diet, but not similar to that shown in the viral photo. The shells and whites are also not pink. Flamingos get their distinct pink colour from the pigments that naturally occur in their diet. At birth, flamingos are grey, and their colour builds up over a number of years. The photo shared on Facebook appears to be an edit of a stock image of an egg. This article is part of our work fact checking potentially false pictures, videos and stories on Facebook. You can read more about this—and find out how to report Facebook content—here. For the purposes of that scheme, we’ve rated this claim as false as flamingo egg yolks are yellow to red in colour. (en)
