  • A clip of Barack Obama giving a speech has been viewed more than a million times in Facebook posts that falsely claim it shows the former US president praising Indonesia's leadership as it was about to host the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022. In fact, the video shows Obama delivering a speech at an Indonesian university during a visit to the country in 2010. The video of Obama giving a speech has been viewed more than 1.6 million times after it was posted here on Facebook on November 10, 2022. Obama believes that Indonesia can unite the USA and Russia during the G20 Summit in Bali, reads the post's Indonesian-language caption. The text overlay on the six-minute 48-second clip reads: If only the current US president is still BARACK OBAMA. Screenshot of the misleading post, taken on November 30, 2022 Indonesia hosted the G20 Summit in the resort island of Bali on November 15-16, 2022 -- an event dominated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. World leaders attending the summit included US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov led the Russian delegration after President Vladimir Putin decided to skip the summit, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the gathering virtually. The footage has also appeared alongside a similar claim here and here on Facebook on the same date. However, the video has been shared with false context. 2010 footage of Obama A reverse image search using keyframes from the footage found the White House previously published a full version of the video here on YouTube on November 10, 2010, when Obama still served as president. The video, more than half-an-hour long, is titled: Indonesia's Example to the World. President Obama speaks on democracy, economic growth and America's relationship to the Muslim world in a speech at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta. November 10, 2010, reads the caption of the video. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in one of the misleading posts (left) and the original White House footage (right): Screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading post (left) and the original White House footage (right) Barack Obama lived in Jakarta for four years from 1967 to 1971, during which he attended an elementary school. He moved to the Indonesian capital after his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, married an Indonesian man called Lolo Soetoro. The transcript of his full speech can be read here on the White House's website. The clip in the misleading posts starts at the two minute eight-second mark of the genuine video and ends at the eight-minute 55-second mark. This portion of the speech does not show Obama mentioning the G20. Only at the 13-minute 25-second mark of the genuine video does he start to mention Indonesia and the G20. Obama is shown saying: America has a stake in an Indonesia that plays its rightful role in shaping the global economy. Gone are the days when seven or eight countries would come together to determine the direction of global markets. That's why the G20 is now the center of international economic cooperation, so that emerging economies like Indonesia have a greater voice and also bear greater responsibility for guiding the global economy. And through its leadership of the G20's anti-corruption group, Indonesia should lead on the world stage and by example in embracing transparency and accountability. Indonesia was elected co-chair of the G20's Working Group on Anticorruption in November 2010, the Jakarta Post reported . Throughout his speech at the University of Indonesia, Obama does not mention Russia at all. Obama's speech was also reported by Indonesian media here and here . (en)
