  • The caption of a video posted on Facebook claims Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in 16 November 2019 senatorial polls in Nigeria’s Kogi West district, beat Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress to win the election. The constituency is in Kogi state. The video was posted on 17 November and has attracted 18,000 shares . It shows the senator in a seemingly celebratory mood, singing and dancing with others to saxophone music. The caption reads : Dino Melaye Defeats Smart Adeyemi. Dino- 264,713, Smart- 180,882. Congratulations Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye. #Kogidecides Election ruled inconclusive But on 17 November Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) declared the election inconclusive because the margin of votes between the candidates was too narrow. Reports say Adeyemi got 80,118 votes to Melaye’s 59,548 but elections in some areas were not held. Inec official Olayinde Lawal was reported as saying the margin between the candidates was lower than the 43,127 registered voters in those excluded areas, leading to the cancellation. – Jennifer Ojugbeli (en)
