  • Was a Snake Head Found in a Can of Green Beans? Claim A woman in South Carolina found a snake's head in a can of Glory Foods green beans. Rating Unknown Like this fact check? Reporting In late December 2018, a Facebook user shared a photograph set showing what appeared to be a snake’s head, claiming that she had found it in a can of Glory Foods green beans: Accompanying the images was a post, which read: Snake for supper anyone?! This was in the CAN of green beans I cooked!!!! Holy crap! #gloryfoods #mccallfarms The original poster tagged Glory Foods’ Facebook page in her post, an action which likely led other readers to comment on the brand’s timeline and ask about the images’ authenticity. As of January 3 2018, she did not publicly share any separate updates on the purported snake head in green beans incident. Glory Foods’ timeline did not feature any independent posts addressing the viral post, and numerous comments on the page’s unrelated posts about the snake head photographs went unanswered by the brand nearly a week after the images began circulating. A Twitter timeline for Glory Foods was last updated in August 2018, and also had no comment about the snake head claim. Curious users even drifted over to Instagram , commenting on Glory Foods’ account, but to no avail: We were unable to locate any news items about the post or its claims. However, a search turned up an interesting coda to the claim — in December 2018, an Alabama woman claimed to have discovered an intact (but obviously deceased) mouse in a separate can of Glory Foods green beans. On December 14 2018, WSFA reported that woman’s claim, but was unable to obtain a response from Glory Foods about the purported rodent contamination: [Andalusia, Alabama woman] Kristy White ... opened a can of Glory Foods Farm Fresh Italian Green Beans and poured it into a casserole dish to put into the microwave. She turned away briefly to take something else out of the microwave and when she turned back around, she immediately saw something in the green beans. Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die Her initial thought was it was a big piece of ham, but it didn’t take long for her to notice it was something else ... After she calmed down, she called the consumer feedback number on the can of beans. White said the moment she told the woman on the phone what she found, it sounded like the woman started reading from a script, saying the company takes safety seriously. White gave her name and contact information, and the woman asked for her address to possibly send White a voucher. White said the woman on the phone also told her to not be concerned if she ate any of the mouse, because everything is sanitized in the canning process. [...] WSFA 12 News has left messages with Glory Foods and is waiting for a response. On January 1 2019, the Andalusia Star-News published an article indicating that the Glory Foods mouse claim was its most popular story in all of 2018. The paper referenced the snake head claim in its reporting: White reported the incident to the consumer helpline for Glory Foods. To date, they’ve offered her a voucher ... wait for it ... more green beans. As of [December 20 2018], she had not received it. Meanwhile, on [December 28 2018], a Northport woman, Michelle Bentley, reported having found a snake in a can of Glory brand green beans with potatoes. And Star-News sports editor Josh Dutton quipped, Maybe they got the snake to help with the mouse problem. Neither organization appeared to obtain a response from Glory Foods about either the snake head or the mouse claims. The claim a woman found a snake head in a Glory Foods can of green beans was still undetermined days after the images were first shared, and Glory Foods did not seem overly eager to address either purported incident. The proximity of the two viral Glory Foods contamination incidents allowed for the possibility that the second was inspired by the first, but we found no reason to suggest either story was fabricated. We contacted Glory Foods about the snake head in green beans claim, but have not yet received a response Posted in Fact Checks , Viral Content Tagged contaminated food rumors , glory foods , green beans , snake , viral facebook posts (en)
