A message shared on Facebook in Nigeria claims Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai said Islam prohibits people protesting against their governments. Kaduna state is in northern Nigeria and its inhabitants are predominantly Muslim. The quote, attributed to El-Rufai, reads in part: What other religions in Nigeria doesn't understand is that the Islamic religion is against citizens protesting against their leaders, but rather pray for them always. That's why if you go to Mosques you see the Imam and the congregation praying for the leaders. The same quote was shared on Facebook here , here and here . But did El-Rufai make this statement? We checked. No evidence The Facebook post gives no details of when or where El-Rufai supposedly made these claims about Islam and protest. A search through his verified Twitter handle and other social media platforms returned no evidence of the statement. There were no reports of the statement in credible local news outlets, which would have been the case if it were true. We found no evidence that El-Rufai said Islam is against citizens protesting against the government.
