  • A video clip of Filipino politician Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr speaking in 2014 about rebuilding efforts after Typhoon Haiyan has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in online posts that claim the interview was never broadcast by Philippine news outlets. The claim was shared by accounts supporting Marcos Jr -- son of late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos -- as he ramped up his bid for the presidency in 2022. But the claim is false: various Philippine news organisations aired portions of Marcos Jr's interview. Other outlets produced reports based on his statement. You weren't able to watch this? That's because it wasn't aired by the mainstream media, reads the Tagalog-language text above this six-minute video posted on Facebook on December 5, 2021. The video has been viewed more than 553,000 times. The caption translates to English as: The one who has a genuine concern for the country. No other than BBM. Screenshot of false post taken on December 11, 2021 BBM refers to the initials of former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr -- son and namesake of the late Philippine dictator. He is seen in the video fielding questions about bunkhouses and foreign donations in Leyte , a province in the central Philippines. In November 2013, Leyte was devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded . Haiyan left more than 7,300 people dead or missing after it ravaged the country. The text at the bottom of the video reads: Has genuine concern. MOST QUALIFIED PRESIDENT. The clip recirculated online as Marcos Jr ramped up his bid for the presidency in 2022, staging rallies across the country. Comments from some social media users on the video suggest they believe Philippine media outlets did not air Marcos Jr's interview. I am not surprised that people are now questioning where [Bongbong Marcos] was during the pandemic and [Haiyan]. You don't see him in the news because the biased media doesn't report about him, wrote one social media user. The video was also shared on Facebook posts here and here , and on YouTube here alongside a similar claim. However, the claim is false. Keyword searches online show the clip was originally posted on Marcos Jr's official YouTube channel on February 27, 2014. The video's headline reads: Sen. Bongbong Marcos - Media Interview during Leyte Bunkhouses inspection 13-Feb-2014. It shows Marcos Jr -- then the chair of the Senate Committee on Public Works -- being interviewed by several journalists during his visit to Leyte, almost 100 days after the disaster. He was inspecting temporary shelters being constructed by the government for those displaced by Haiyan. Television microphones bearing the names of various media outfits can be seen in the clip. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the false post (L) and the original video (R): Further keyword searches found Philippine media reports that aired portions of the interview on television. Broadcaster NET25 and state-run Philippine Television Network aired segments on their newscast on February 15, 2014. Philippine media outlet Inquirer also published a video report on their website on February 13, 2014. Other Philippine media organisations -- including ABS-CBN and Rappler -- also covered Marcos Jr's visit and reported on his comments. (en)
