  • A video has been viewed tens of thousands of times in Facebook and Twitter posts that claim it shows Indian politician Tejashwi Yadav handing out cash while campaigning in Bihar state elections. The claim is false: the footage actually shows Yadav providing financial support to flood victims in Bihar in August 2020, at least a month before the state’s election dates were announced. The video was published here on Facebook on October 29, 2020. It has been viewed more than 68,000 times. The post’s Hindi caption translates to English as: Video of Tejashwi Yadav distributing currency notes during Bihar election campaigning. The audio in the background is this Hindu devotional song. Tejashwi Yadav is a politician and leader of opposition in the east Indian state of Bihar , which is currently holding elections in three different phases from October 28 till November 7, 2020. Here is an AFP report on the vote. The election dates were announced by India’s election body on September 25, 2020. The 57-second clip was also published alongside a similar claim on Facebook here , here , here and here ; and on Twitter here by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party member and social media head of the party's Bengal state unit Rakesh Bose. The claim, however, is false. A keyword search on Google found a longer version of the footage published on Facebook here on July 31, 2020. The video was uploaded as a Facebook Live on Tejashwi Yadav’s official page. The Hindi caption translates to English as: In Chakia , Pipra constituency, Yadav met with flood victims by sharing their grief and pain. Bihar was hit by floods in July-August 2020 with nearly eight million people affected, as AFP reported at the time. Yadav met with the flood victims and provided cash support, as reported by Hindi newspaper Navbharat Times here and here on August 17, 2020. Below is a screenshot comparison of the misleading post (L) and Yadav’s Facebook live video (R): (en)
