However, the claim is false. The picture was cropped from an AFP photo of Johnson removing his shoes before entering Sabarmati Ashram, the home of Indian independence icon Mahatma Gandhi. You've ruined the image of the British Empire, reads a Chinese-language tweet published here on June 14, 2022, where it has been liked more than 490 times. The tweet includes a screenshot of a post on Chinese news aggregation app Jinri Toutiao, which shows UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson appearing to inspect one of his shoes. The post's caption reads: British Prime Minister Boris' shoe broke during a visit. The Jinri Toutiao post has garnered more than 2,400 likes.
