  • A video has been viewed thousands of times in social media posts that claim it shows protesters chanting in support of the Sikh separatist movement at a bike rally during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the northwest state of Punjab in January 2022. The video, however, has been shared in a false context. It has circulated in social media posts since late December 2021 -- at least one week before Modi's Punjab visit. The video was shared on Twitter here on January 6, 2022, where it has been viewed almost 100,000 times. The video appears to show people on bikes chanting Khalistan Zindabad which translates to English as Long Live Khalistan. The Sikh separatist movement seeks to carve an independent homeland called Khalistan out of the Indian state of Punjab. Punjab is the only Sikh-majority state in India. The post's caption reads: Why Did The Congress Government Not Arrest Those Who Raised Slogans Of Khalistan Zindabad Yesterday ?#PresidentRuleInPunjab. The Indian National Congress Party is the country's main opposition party against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Modi. The Congress party is currently in power in the state of Punjab. Screenshot of the misleading Twitter post, taken on January 17, 2022 The misleading post circulated after Modi visited the city of Ferozepur in the northern Indian state of Punjab on January 5, 2022. The protesters -- which included farmers' unions and groups -- were demonstrating against Modi's agricultural policies, local media reported. While attempting to block Modi's supporters en route to the rally, they blocked the prime minister's convoy on a flyover, the reports said. The protest was reported by The Hindu and The Indian Express . The video circulated alongside a similar claim on Facebook here , here and here ; and on Twitter here and here . However, the claim is false. A reverse image search followed by keyword searches found the video circulated in social media posts since December 27, 2021 -- more than one week before Modi's Punjab visit. A longer version of the video was shared on YouTube here on December 27, 2021. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video shared in the misleading post (left) and the video shared on YouTube (right): Screenshot comparison of the video shared in the misleading post (left) and the video shared on YouTube (right) The Punjabi-language title of the YouTube video translates to English as: The Occasion of Shaheedi Jor Mela -- Kesari March resounded with slogans of 'Khalistan Zindabad'. Shaheedi Jor Mela is a three-day annual event held from December 25 annually that marks the martyrdom of Sikh figures Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh. The video was also shared in multiple Facebook and Twitter posts in December 2021 -- including here , here and here . (en)
