  • A post on Facebook page Get Jobs Kenya claims that the Standard Gauge Railway has new jobs available. The Standard Gauge Railway, or SGR, is a large infrastructure project by the Kenyan government. It’s one of the largest since the country’s independence in 1963. The post claims the SGR is hiring drivers, cleaners, lady shop attendants, passenger stewards, guards, storekeepers and station attendants. It includes a link to a website with further details for online applications. Another link leads to an application form with a big red flag: applicants are asked to pay a fee of KSh350. The form is insistent about this fee but claims it will be automatically refunded if you don’t qualify to get a job. This is typical of many fake job ads. Most legitimate companies do not ask for any payment during the recruitment process. Is this a genuine job ad, or a scam? We checked. SGR company says ad a hoax The China Communication Construction Company , the company building the SGR, said on its official Facebook account that the advert was fake. It said the post and pages the ad links to are indeed a hoax and it is not official communication from any of our offices. It added that the company only advertises available job opportunities in the local dailies and posts the same on its social media platforms. It does not charge any applicants for interviews. – Grace Gichuhi (en)
