  • A post shared on Facebook purports President Joe Biden is signing a United Nations (UN) Small Arms Treaty, which would establish an international gun control registry. Verdict: False The claim is false. There is no evidence to suggest Biden is planning to sign such a treaty. Fact Check: Biden renewed calls for gun control legislation following a Raleigh, North Carolina shooting earlier in October that killed five, the Huffington Post reported. Biden said we must pass an assault weapons ban and remove weapons of war from U.S. streets while touting the Bipartisan Safer Communities act as the most significant gun safety law in 30 years, according to the outlet. The Facebook post, liked 14,000 times, purports Biden is signing a UN Small Arms Treaty, which would establish an international gun control registry. The alleged registry would allow China and third-world dictators to track the owner of every rifle, shotgun, and handgun sold in the world, the post claims. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting Biden is signing such a treaty. Likewise, there is no mention of the claim on the White House’s verified social media accounts or website . Governmental agencies such as the ATF , FBI , and Department of State have also not publicly commented on the purported claim. A keyword search reveals the claim appears to refer to the UN Arms Trade Treaty (UNODA) , which was adopted in December 2014. The treaty, which the U.S. is a signatory , addresses regulating international trade in conventional arms – from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships, according to its website.
