We investigated this possibility through evolutionary invasion analyses to determine whether rare-mutant QS+ cells can increase in frequency in populations of either EPS+ or EPS− cells, and whether a successful QS+ strain, once in the majority, can subsequently resist invasion by rare EPS+ and EPS− mutants.
