  • Did Manhattanites Start a Petition to Change Part of 5th Avenue to ‘Barack Obama Avenue’? Claim New Yorkers dislike President Trump so much they made a petition to rename the stretch of 5th Avenue where Trump Tower is after President Obama. Rating Mixed Like this fact check? Reporting An August 10 2019 tweet by @donaldmackenz30 asserted that New Yorkers (or, more specifically, Manhattanites) dislike United States President Donald Trump so much that they created a petition proposing that the stretch of 5th Avenue between 56th and 59th Streets in New York City be renamed President Barack H. Obama Avenue: Trump Fact: New Yorkers don't like Trump. They have started a petition to request that the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 59th be renamed President Barack H. Obama Avenue. If it gets the green light, Trump Tower will have a new address. Poetic justice or what...? — Donaldo (@Stornoway_Cove) August 10, 2019 Trump Tower is located on 5th Avenue between 56th and 57th Street. Finding a link to a petition matching the description of the one in the tweet was not difficult, as it appeared immediately in the replies beneath the tweet linked above. A MoveOn.org page titled Rename Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower: ‘President Barack H. Obama Avenue' had 65,000 signatures on August 13 2019. It stated : To be delivered to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York City Council Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die We request the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed President Barack H. Obama Avenue. Any addresses on that stretch of Fifth Avenue should be changed accordingly. The second linked tweet pointing to the position invited anyone reading it to sign — not just New Yorkers. Similarly, although the effort was addressed to New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, it didn’t seem to be initiated or promoted specifically by residents of Manhattan. A smaller, second Change.org petition titled Rename 5th Ave in NYC to ‘Barack Obama Avenue' had just over 300 signatures: Since his inauguration, Donald Trump has set about reversing every single policy decision made by Barack Obama, regardless of the cost to Americans. This has been a destructive trend. As a symbolic rebuke to this destructive policy path, myself and many internet denizens suggest renaming 5th ave in Manhattan to Barack Obama Avenue so that no matter what, Donald Trump will have to live with the legacy of the distinguished Barack Obama. More than 65,000 people signed a petition addressed to the mayor of New York City requesting that 5th Avenue between 56th and 59th Streets be renamed in honor of former United States President Barack Obama — thereby placing Trump Tower on that portion of 5th Avenue. But the petition did not seem to necessarily originate in Manhattan, and people from all over the country (and world) could, and did, sign it.
