  • A video has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook alongside a claim it shows a policeman in India shooting a couple in broad daylight. The claim is false; the people in the video are actors and the scene was filmed for an upcoming web series, local police said. The video was shared in this Facebook post on April 12, 2021. The post’s Hindi caption translates to English as: The way this cop shot the couple the same way this cop should be shot at the same location. I oppose these types of policemen who misuse their power. They have been assigned to protect, not to kill. The footage shows a dispute between two men. A man in civilian clothes pushes a man in uniform before the officer pushes him back and shoots him. The man’s girlfriend screams and the officer shoots her too. An identical video was also shared alongside a similar claim here , and here on Facebook. However, the claim is false. A keyword search found a local police chief calling out the posts as fake news and clarifying that the scene was part of a web series. This is not a real incident, this is part of a web series which was shot in Karnal, Superintendent Ganga Ram Punia told Karnal Breaking News in a report posted to the channel’s YouTube page on April 13, 2021. Karnal is located in the north Indian state of Haryana. The claim was also debunked by another local police officer in the same interview . This is a pure work of fiction and part of a web series which was shot a few weeks back. Local police are trying to find the culprits who shared it with a misleading claim, said Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav. People should not spread fake news, this is an offence. The actor who plays the police officer also spoke out in the report to debunk the misleading social media posts. It was purely fictional, no original incident of shooting happened at that site, Vinay Guhad said. The actor and police officers interviewed did not give the name of the series for which the scene was filmed. A keyword search found a longer version of the video shot from a different angle uploaded on the YouTube channel of an Indian fact-checking website Fact Crescendo. The title of the video reads: Web series shoot at Friends cafe in Karnal. Photos of ‘Friends Cafe’ in Karnal are available on Google Maps. Below is a screenshot comparison of Friends Cafe in Karnal in misleading post (L) and Google images (R) (en)
