  • A video has been viewed tens of thousands of times in social media posts alongside a claim it shows protesters blocking an Indian government minister's car ahead of local elections in the subcontinent's most populous state Uttar Pradesh in 2022. However, the video has been shared in a misleading context; it has circulated in reports since 2020 about opposition party workers blocking the minister's car as they called for justice in a high-profile rape case. The video has been viewed over 46,000 times after it was was shared on Facebook here on January 29, 2022. The video's caption states: Smriti Irani escaped attack from angry people of her constituency in [Uttar Pradesh] when approached for votes. Media refraining from showing this! Received on [WhatsApp]. Screenshot of the misleading post taken on February 1, 2022 Smriti Irani is India's minister for women and child development. She is also a member of parliament for a constituency in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where state polls are due to be held from February 10, 2022. Irani's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the incumbent party in the state but faces stiff competition from the opposition Samajwadi Party in the upcoming polls. The video was shared alongside a similar claim in both English and Hindi-language posts here and here on Facebook; and here and here on Twitter. Comments to the posts indicate social media users thought the video was related to the upcoming polls. One user wrote: [Uttar Pradesh] people have beaten and chased away 9 BJP candidates in the last 5 days. This number can increase in near future. However, keyword searches found the video is old. The video was earlier published here in a report by Indian news channel Nyoooz TV on October 3, 2020. The report is about workers from the opposition Congress party blocking Smriti Irani's car in protest over her alleged silence on a high-profile rape case. The report states: Congress raises Smriti Irani Murdabad slogans, stop her convoy in protest against Hathras case. The gang-rape of a teenager from the disadvantaged Dalit caste in Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh sparked outrage across India and triggered days of protests in 2020. AFP reported on the case here and here . Below is a comparison of the video in the misleading posts (left) and the 2020 news report (right). Images of protesters blocking Irani's car have also been published in October 2020 reports by several other Indian media outlets here , here and here . (en)
